“Commander! Northern patrol just discovered an infected rabbit dead in the Nollu River!”
Commander Bouse looks up from a recon report, alarm evident on his face. “Are they damming the river?”
“Yessir; one of the men came down for suits, and reported it.”
“Has an announcement been made?”
“Yessir.”
“Good, good,” Bouse says distractedly. It was entirely possible that the rabbit had become infected some other way, and just died in the river, contaminating from the point on, which, while worrying, wasn’t nearly as bad as the river being the source. “Have they taken samples of the water upstream?”
“I don’t know sir, most likely.”
“Have Dunn radio Center, inform them of what’s happening, I’m going head up there and help.”
“Sir, are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“Doesn’t matter, does it? If it’s the river, we’re all dead anyway.”
